Study the ethics of equine training.
A trainer must be guided by personal ethics. Become confident that you have the knowledge to make informed ethical decisions. Learn how suffering can be quantified and how to implement the Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive strategy as promoted by professional training organizations. Debate the questions of why horses are treated as livestock, rather than pets. You will explore equine training welfare and ethics through reading, videos, and online activities. This achievement will be evaluated by a quiz and written essay assessment. This course is required for anyone participating at Mustang Camp either as an intern or trainer.
In this course, you will learn to:
- Describe the technology for measurement of animal suffering.
- Discuss the welfare implications of horse training.
- Discuss the pros and cons of considering horses livestock.
- Articulate the sequence of interventions in the LIMA model.
